Sierra Pilot and the "Keys to the City"

Words By: Octavia Allison

With 2 new singles coming out so far this year, Sierra Pilot has no intention of stopping. This rock group “doesn’t want to be a one trick pony” and are eager to get back on the road after 2 and a half years of forced hiatus. Sierra Pilot morphed from a teenage garage band into an established rock group. They shared the stage with notable acts like Crown Lands, Harm and Ease and Monster Truck. The band was formed in 2016 and 6 years later they are planning the release of their first full length album. Frontman Taylor Lieth tells me about the band’s journey and how they are making an impression. “I feel like I have something to prove. Small towns make you tough”. Canadian music struggles to gain traction but this band hopes to break through globally. Taylor credits a venue called Maxwell’s for opportunities to learn, play and shoot videos. This venue has been a crucial part of keeping Sierra Pilot in people’s conscience. “Being an independent band, you can move at your own pace, but it's such a material word that people forget about you so quickly. It takes a lot of

successful hits.” This is why the band has been working non-stop. Consistency is the currency in the music industry these days. Keys to the City is the title of the band’s upcoming single, dropping August 19th.

Strong downbeat hold this song firmly in place, as guitar coaxes the tune further along. Raspy vocals add depth and power to the track. With a mysterious whisper Leith calls out “nobody’s getting out alive, we got the keys to the city tonight.” Taylor describes the piece as “roots rock.” Sierra Pilot performed at Maxwell’s for an outdoor festival and it’s hopefully the first of many performances this year. “We want to make it to the northern states by next year and we are going to start branching out to other provinces. There’s a hell of a lot more to come.” The band is hoping to release their upcoming album some time in September, pending the group’s touring schedule. Sierra Pilot has dug their feet into the Canadian music scene and has made it clear they are here to stay.
