Following the release of her album “Honey,” I got to catch Samia’s show at Scoot Inn in Austin. One thing that has always kept me hooked on her music is her transformation as an artist throughout her career, and her live performance has undoubtedly evolved with her as well. From opening for Donna Missal, to headlining venues across the US, Samia just keeps getting better.
Her opening song, “Kill Her Freak Out,” sets the tone; she even remarks, “it’s only going to get more dramatic from here.” After Samia lulls the audience into this somber, dramatic, and meditative state, it’s obviously time to dance. The switch to “Fit N Full” from her first album has such stark contrast but still meshes so well with her connected lyricism. Even when her music describes situations that are so exact and specific to her own experiences, there is still something so genuine and relatable about these stories she recounts.
However, what truly moved me was the spiritual experience that “Breathing Song” is. The act of a performer singing their own words to a crowd is a vulnerable experience in itself, but with a song filled with so much truth and catharsis, it becomes alive. With the audience full of teary eyes, the transition to title track, “Honey,” couldn’t have felt better. Technical difficulties initially prevented the band from starting the song, but that didn’t stop fans. A chorus of voices singing (screaming) the words on a warm and humid Texas night truly felt like dying and going to heaven. I absolutely cannot wait to see what she accomplishes next, and I look forward to the next time I go to a Samia show with my girls and a hopeful heart.
Keep up with Samia here.
