Maddie Zahm with opener corock in Kansas City

Walking into the Encore on a chilly Friday evening, I did not know what to expect. It was a sold out show, so everyone was packed in like sardines. When the lights went up, and the opener entered the stage, the room filled with cheers. They introduced themselves as corook, and put on one of the best sets I think I have ever seen. The way they interacted with the crowd, and were so personable and funny, had you smiling the whole time. When Maddie Zahm and her band came on stage, the room roared. She has a way of connecting with her audience that makes the show so special. Her lyrics are so raw and real, there was not a dry eye in the room. But there were also moments where everyone was dancing their hearts out. Most of her songs are about her blossoming into who she actually is, after growing up in a religious household, and lying to herself about her sexuality. An amazing show that brought people who have similar backgrounds together. It was kind of therapeutic, in a way. If you ever have a chance to see corook or Maddie Zahm, do yourself a favor and buy a ticket!
