Words By: Rob Lucchesi
Let’s play a little word association game- three words, and you say the first thing that comes to mind when you hear them, ok? Ready? Brooklyn. Laundromat. Red. Alright, now if you said cherry blossoms, disco balls, and Ciao motorbikes, then first off, that's wildly specific, and I think you’re lying. Second,we’ve got a great song for you that you’ll never put down
once you hear it.
Kevin Holliday’s latest summer single “Out of Me” is an out-of-body experience wrapped in gold and glitter, stained by a rose-colored nostalgia trip to the bodega on the corner. Crisp, clear, arpeggiated guitar riffs over the grooviest bass run of the month, coupled with Holliday’s cool and confident lyrics, put you smack in the middle of the road on Holliday’s racing red Ciao bike in the heat of July.
“Out of Me” is a step out of the dance line for Holliday, and a strong and decisive one at that. The Brooklyn-based singer has cemented his sound in funk, house, and more experimental pop and R&B sounds, but after the release of his single “Regrets” and the subsequent EP OMNI, Holliday has begun dipping his toes into more disco and art-pop inspired sounds fused together with his own powerful style, resulting in late night summertime cruise playlist essentials, like his two singles “Expensive Tastes'' and “Put It Down” from earlier this year.
Holliday released a companion music video with his summer single, directed by New
York based, Montana-raised director and cinematographer Cam DeMars. DeMars has done work for South Florida based artist Hush Forte, and product spots for Sweet Protection and Oboz Shoes. The video perfectly encapsulates “Out of Me”’s summertime sweetheart vibes, filled with cherry blossoms fit for the dance floor, and dazzling laundromats soaked in green lasers and disco balls. The story follows Holliday on his bike running errands at the market, getting a drink at the bodega, and doing laundry. All the while his daydreams about a certain someone start to bleed into his daily tasks, blurring the line between his reality and his imagination.
“Out of Me” is more than deserving of its plays and praise. It’s fleeting and detached, while bouncy and grounded, all tied up in a glitter bow of disco balls. It’s a must-listen track from a must-follow artist that’s sure to heat up your summer fantasies.
