DBMK "Haunted House" Review + Fans Thoughts on New Music

In preparation for their upcoming record,“Jump in the Dark,” DBMK blessed us with another single titled “Haunted House.” Kyle Knudsen & Colton Ward lead the group into a whole new era with these new songs. Over the next couple of months, the band will be releasing the record in installments instead of all at once. Previous installments included songs and videos for “Smilin” and “Thin.” DBMK is a band known for having a very strong fan base. Everything the band does is always for the fans and this song is no exception.

When listening to the single for the first time, the haunting beat of the intro captivated me like no other. We immediately hear old familiar sounds that fans know and love while simultaneously detecting something different. The soothing yet eerie sound mixed with Knudsen’s dream-like voice in the first verse blend together beautifully and make you feel like you’re in a sort of trance. That trance soon ends as the hard hitting chorus comes in by surprise. It is so catchy by the second listen I was already singing along. One of the many reasons why I love this band is because of their ability to break the rules when it comes to their craft. With every DBMK song, it is obvious that they unapologetically do what they want. It is pretty impossible to describe their sound because of the way they take bits and pieces from different genres and make it their own.

When it comes to live music, DBMK has one of the best live performances I’ve seen. The energy and passion they bring to the stage is unmatched. I can’t help thinking about how powerful this song would be if we actually got to hear it in a live setting. It is a crime that fans can not hear this song live at the moment. Like all of their other songs, it deserves to be played in a sold out arena in front of thousands of people. Until then, put your headphones on, turn up the volume and jump into this new chapter with DBMK.

We reached out to fans and asked for their thoughts on DBMK's new music and how it has impacted them, here are the responses we got.

Emma Garza Tampa, Florida (@sleepygrins):

The sound of the new music has been unexpected and yet still very much matches DBMK. These songs portrayed feelings I didn't know how to put into words. By validating some difficult experiences they carry with them a powerful message.

Madeline Zezuto (@madelinezezuto):

The music DBMK puts out has always had a special place in my heart, and always will. Hearing their new songs has really helped me through a lot with the pandemic going on and having to work two jobs throughout these tough times. I always get to hear their new songs late at night, and their sound has a certain characteristic that makes you want to listen to it over and over again, driving in the dark or dancing in your room in the dark at 3 in the morning. I am so excited for all of their new songs that will be coming out and I am so extremely proud of them for creating such amazing music

Abby Pennsylvania (@happyseascn):

DBMK’s new music has helped me learn to accept myself more and helped me feel less alone when i'm going through a tough time.

French Kult (@entertainmyf_):

I discovered DBMK two years ago when I was feeling really insecure about my future and they helped me to try and stay positive. I love how insanely passionate they are about what they're doing and how they own what they do and who they are. As someone who, like many others, has been bullied, Thin will always have a special place in my heart and will always remind me to stay true to myself and find my own voice, no matter what other people might think.

Emily Porter Los Angeles, CA (@fakeyououut):

DBMK has been one of the most important bands in my life since 2016. Their music has grown with me— I was in a completely different place mentally before I found them. Their new music has been such a light for me, it’s kept me grounded during this hard time. I’m so excited to hear what they’re working on next, I know it’ll be just as great as the stuff they just released.

Lyss (velma.jpg):

dbmk was the first concert i ever went to alone. At 15, I stood in a crowded little bar with my best friends and I realized I had found something amazing. they bring people together, creating electricity between a room full of strangers and you can't help but feel safe and ecstatic. they're bright and show that you don't have to hide the things you're afraid of.

Hannah Howells Orlando, Florida (@hhowells):

I accidentally stumbled upon dbmk 3 years ago at a show in a way too crowded coffee house and sticking with them has been one of the coolest things to experience. Their music holds a very special place in my heart as it has been sort of the soundtrack to my life ever since I first saw them. new music from them could not have come at a better time as it has really stuck with me through these odd times and given me a little escape from the real world. I am really excited to be here to see what they do next.

Levi Tampa, Florida (@whodoyoudriveto):

My name is Levi and I'm from Tampa, Florida. The new dbmk music to me is the start of a new era. One where everyone in the kult is welcome and there's no one left behind. The new era is where everyone can be themselves, without shame and guilt. The new music is music to heal to and to fight away everyone who taught us we were wrong.

Téa Schmidt Indiana (@tea_ambrelle):

I’m Téa Schmidt from Indiana. I run the official Indiana Kult Instagram and Twitter. New music from DBMK always seems to represent overcoming and thriving. DBMK’s music is meant to empower the listener and help them learn that they are not alone in their struggles.

Amanda Elman (@amandaelman, co-creator):

I’m Amanda, a co-creator of Small Talks, and a (honorary) member of hometown Kult. A few years ago I found DBMK, and ended up stumbling upon a passion for music, friendship and art along the way. There's a feeling that comes with dbmk, simply one of friendship. DBMK feels like comfort, and good times. New music means pairing nostalgia with the struggles of growing up. It provides a sense of comfort, and empowerment- a chance to grow both within the music and without. Small Talks has evolved to be what we loved most about loving DBMK: the power of fans, a sense of community, and showcasing talents of all shapes and sizes. The new music feels like it's specifically for us, the people who found them when they needed them the most.

Emma Hintz St. Petersburg, Florida (@wtmjemma, co-creator):

Five years ago I stumbled upon dbmk at the 97X BBQ in 2015. I had missed their set that day but managed to grab a sticker from their merch tent, that night I went home and decided I should give them a listen. “Traffic” was the first song I heard and I instantly fell in love, since then I have seen Dbmk over 20 times and have met some of the greatest people along the way, including Amanda. Seeing Dbmk live is an experience like no other, even when you don’t know anyone in the room it still somehow feels like home. Small Talks exists because Dbmk brought Amanda and I together, without their music who knows if we would have ever crossed paths. Watching Dbmk grow into the band they are today has been an incredible journey, one I am so glad to be a part of.
