If you are a fan of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, or Faye Webster look no further than Atlanta native, Becca Harvey, better known as Girlpuppy. I had the pleasure of sitting down with her after her incredible set at Shaky Knees, here’s what she had to say.

Small Talks (Emma Hintz): Let's start out with a little introduction for those who don’t know you.

Becca Harvey (Girlpuppy): Hello! I am Becca Harvey, I make music under the name

Girlpuppy.

Emma: Is this your first festival?

Becca: No it’s my second, I played Riot Fest in Chicago last year, but I’m still new to this! It’s only my second!

Emma: How was Riot Fest?

Becca: Oh Riot Fest was great, I love Chicago, I always call it my second home. Whenever I play there it always feels like a hometown show, all of my friends end up coming out! The lineup was so good last year, it was crazy. We saw Slipknot, and Patti Smith, it was amazing.

Emma: Where do you find inspiration when writing your music?

Becca: Everyday life, when people make me upset, or mad, or sad I write about them. I guess just people and places, along with the weird stuff that I think of in my brain.

Emma: Do you have any advice for someone struggling to find inspiration?

Becca: Honestly, think of songwriting as journaling. Whatever you are thinking in your head just write it all down, I think that’s what has helped me.

Emma: What’s your favorite song to perform live?

Becca: Hmmmm, well a lot of the songs that we played today we had never played before and they ended up becoming my favorite. There's a song of mine called Teenage Dream that was really fun and I think it's now my favorite to perform. Before this

Emma: Was there a moment where you kind of sat back and thought “yeah this is what I want to do for the rest of my life”?

Becca: I think the first show I ever played I felt that immediately.

Emma: And where was that?

Becca: It was right here in Atlanta at the Eastern on their rooftop, it was my EP release show. It was my first time ever playing a show ever in my life and I was so nervous, I felt like I was going to pass out. And then I did it and I was like “Oh my god I want to do this every day”.

Emma: Do you have any fun tour stories?

Becca: Oh my goodness fun tour stories, I think during the last tour I was on with Matt Maltese anything could be turned into a story because we were just goofing out the whole time. Matt and I met and instantly became best-friend soulmates, literally same sense of humor, being stupid, saying slay. Maybe when we got the whole crowd in Austin to say slay, like you literally have to slay.

Emma: Is there a favorite city that you’ve played in?

Becca: Oh for sure Chicago or Atlanta, like I said hometown!

Emma: Are there any Artists you have dreamed of playing with?

Becca: Caroline Pollacheck and Taylor Swift, those are the top two for sure. It’s all I want give me a chance!

Emma: Well maybe they’ll see this interview and be like “Okay let’s take girlpuppy on tour”

Becca: Well in that case hit me up!

Emma: Do you have any new music coming out, what’s next for girlpuppy?

Becca: I do! I have an album that I made months ago that will be out by the end of the year so expect some singles to start rolling out over the summer, and expect another single to be coming out by the end of the summer. Maybe I can’t say. So yes, lots of new music coming out, 2022 is the year of girlpuppy. Manifesting.

Emma: Any last words you want to say before we depart?

Becca: Slive, Slaugh, Slove.
