Caroline Loveglow should be on everyone’s radar, the LA pop artist was recently signed to 100%Electronica and is proving to the world that she is something special. Loveglow recently released her first album, Strawberry and upon first listen I was immediately hooked. The production is absolutely perfect, her vocals flow so nicely, and the lyrics punch you right in the gut. Strawberry is one of my favorite releases of the year so far, and I think it
really is an album that everyone needs to listen to. Caroline Loveglow is soon to be a household name in the Dream Pop genre, right alongside artists like The Marias, Beach House and Melody’s Echo Chamber.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Loveglow at her tour stop in Tampa with Small Black. It’s not everyday that I am able to talk to artists that I really do love and believe in, and Caroline Loveglow is one of those artists. We discussed the release of her album Strawberry, her upcoming tour with Hatchie, and more!
Small Talks (Emma): So first off, introduce yourself to the people reading!
Caroline Loveglow: Hi! My name is Caroline Loveglow, make dream-pop/indie music.
Emma: So you just released your first album Strawberry, how does it feel to have your first album out as Caroline Loveglow?
Caroline: It feels, pretty insane. There’s been a long build up to it being finished, I started it in 2019, and finished it in 2019, so i’ve been sitting on it for a while, I’ve just been scared about putting it out. It’s pretty surreal to finally have it out.
Emma: Can you tell us a little bit about the writing process, how the album came to be, all the fun little details!
Caroline: Most of the songs started just by me and an acoustic guitar, and then I’ll translate that into logic. I started off doing kind of singer-songwriter type stuff but it didn’t really feel me, so once I learned to produce I would write it on guitar, then translate it into logic. Lyrics are super super important to me.
Emma: And that’s obvious in your song writing!
Caroline: That’s one thing I always try to remember, I don’t want to get lazy about it.
Emma: Where did the name “Strawberry” come from?
Caroline: That’s honestly a really good question, when I was naming the song there’s a line that goes “Strawberry sweet tart” and I just really like the name strawberry. I just feel like it doesn’t give any kind of preconceived idea of what the music will sound like. It can be anything, I guess.
Emma: So how has your experience been going from being an independent artist to being signed to a label?
Caroline: It has been wonderful. I was honestly pretty skeptical about signing with a label because of all of the horror stories I’ve heard, but being such a huge fan of George who started my label, and just being such a huge fan of the label itself, it’s been insane. It has been a total dream, I would never be in Florida right now if I wasn’t signed. They have helped me gain so many new fans, and George has so selflessly shared his fans with me, it’s just been really great so far.
Emma: So you have been playing music for a long time, you started at a very young age, when did you kind of take a step back and realize, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life?
Caroline: I think probably when I started doing open mics, I kind of forced that to by my identity. So I think when I found out writing lyrics can be an outlet for mental distress and you can just finally let go of stuff that you’ve had boxed up, and that was when I was about 13 or 14.
Emma: Are there any musical inspirations that helped you get here, old or new?
Caroline: Oh, there are so many. The cure is one of my favorite bands in the world, and definitely have so many influences sonically. I love Elliot Smith and Phoebe Bridgers, I think Phoebe is phenomenal and an incredible songwriter. Bryan Eno, Kid Cudi, Mark Ronson, there are so many. I was really inspired by other producers.
Emma: Where do you normally find inspiration for song writing and do you have any tips for people who get stuck?
Caroline: Damn that’s a good question. At least for me, the inspiration comes from my own experiences, I guess? It’s really hard for me to write about other people and I wish I could because that would be, amazing. It’s usually to wrap something up to make my subconscious rectify, and sometimes I don’t write at all, which is perfectly fine. I don’t force it ever. My tips would be, don’t force it, and go see a show you love!
Emma: You’re going on tour in May, what can people expect from your shows?
Caroline: The full album! I love Hatchie, and I am really excited to tour with her, she’s so sweet and cool and i’ve been such a big fan of hers for so long! But yeah, the whole album, longer set, same set up, layne and I, we’re going everywhere so, it’s gonna be amazing. It’s definitely going to be a good first experience. It’s so weird because I am so used to playing to nobody, or at a bar with a guy who’s yelling “cool skirt!” so, this is so new and crazy for me.
Emma: What’s been on your on repeat playlist recently?
Caroline: Should we see?
Emma: You are so brave for that because I would definitely have to lie for mine.
Caroline: My on repeat playlist is “Little Bother” by King Princess, Bryan Eno “Freedom Fighter”, “Power Electric” Kid Cudi, Phoebe Bridgers “Smoke Signals”, and then a thousand George Clanton’s. Oh and a lot of Dua Lipa.
Emma: Lastly, what can we expect from you in the future?
Caroline: Tour with Hatchie, new music, eventually a headline tour!
It’s just so cool to see a musician that has a true passion for the art they create be able to do just that. The whole goal of Small Talks as a publication is to feature artists that deserve the platform, and I can’t think of an artist that deserves that platform more. Seriously guys, listen to Strawberry and go see Caroline Loveglow on her tour with Hatchie… you won’t regret it!
