In November, I had the wonderful opportunity of doing show coverage for Cronulla, Australia’s own Adam Newling whom was opening for Skeggs in Asbury Park, NJ. Adam performed an insanely energetic and captivating set and I HIGHLY encourage catching a show of his if given the opportunity. Newling has this wonderfully comforting folk sound paired raspy vocals with bright harmonica breaks that I just can’t get enough of! What’s more to say Adam also recently celebrated the release of a new single, ‘Barmy’ and it’s simply ear candy- Catchy guitar riffs, a sweet melody, a touch of an eccentric tambourine, AND story-telling lyricism. We love it so much we decided to link it here for you just so you could give a listen.
Now we get a little more personal- I asked Adam a few questions regarding his artistry as well as his experience touring in the US for the first time:
How was your experience touring the United States for the first time? What were some of your favorite things & also dislikes?
It was unreal. I can’t think of any things that I disliked, it was my first time going through America so I guess I was having a bit of culture shock; Everything was new and funny.
How did you discover your love for music & musical inclination and decide that this is what you wanted to do?
Me Ma gave me my first acoustic guitar, she had it from when she was in university, but never actually played it. I dug it up in the garage and then my parents showed me Bob Dylan and Neil Young and it was all over. That was when I was about 8 years old and it’s been the only thing I’ve actually been able to do ever since.
How would you describe your music to someone who’s never listened to it before?
I’d just say I croak and ramble and play guitar and that if you haven’t listened to it you probably should, you’d probably like it.
What project or song have you had the most fun time making/are most proud of? Which is your favorite to play live?
I’ve made a huge effort to make music with my closest friends so everything I do is always fun. Bit of a dark horse but I love playing a song called ‘ The Morgue’- We play it real different with the band to the way it’s recorded and it’s just always a special moment in the set.
What are some things you’re looking forward to?
Me and my mate Ruby Fields have been working on an album together for a while called…(Small Talks Inside Scoop: We’re keeping this one a secret until it dropsss)
What’s a random fun fact about yourself that isn’t well known?
I love making origami and listening to drum and bass music in spare time.
Which songs/artists have been on repeat for you?
I’ve been listening to heaps of Press Club, (AUS band) they rip!
It was such a pleasure meeting Adam. We here at Small Talks are over the moon to see more from him. Keep an eye out for Adam’s album feature with Ruby Fields, we’re very excited to share it with you! But in the meantime, you can keep up with Adam Newling and his music on these platforms!
